Poker News

Tuesday was an extremely busy day at the 2012 World Series of Poker with five tournaments running simultaneously. One, the $5,000 Seven Card Stud event, concluded with California’s John Monnette winning his second ever gold bracelet. Two events wound their way down to their respective final tables, while two others completed their initial days. Let’s take a quick look at the tournaments that will be continuing on Wednesday.

Event #9: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Re-entry

This tournament is unique, not because it had two starting days (that has been done plenty in the past), but because anyone who busted out on the first day could pay another buy-in and try again on the second day. There were some hiccups, as a few players were able to re-enter more than once, but there was still a tournament for everyone else to play and now we’re down to the final nine.

Ryan Olisar leads the way heading into Wednesday with 3.715 million chips, well ahead of 2011 double bracelet winner (including the $50,000 Poker Players Championship) Brian Rast, who sits with 2.415 million. Also in the mix are Amanda Musumeci (2.04 million) and Greg “FBT” Mueller (820,000). 3,404 players entered the tournament, creating a prize pool of over $4.5 million and a first prize of $781,398.

The final table will commence at 1:00pm Vegas time.

Event #11: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha

Also starting at 1:00pm is the final table of the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. Sitting behind a “tonne” of chips is Michigan’s Charles Tonne, who is looking for his first WSOP bracelet. He has just five recorded live tournament cashes in his career, one of which was a win in the $350 Pot-Limit Omaha Re-buy event at the 2011 WSOP Circuit stop in Hammond, Indiana. If Tonne should finish in 5th place or better, he will more than double his lifetime winnings. The champion of this event will receive $265,211.

Two other events began Tuesday, the highlight of which is the $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em tournament. All 32 players still standing entering today’s play have made the money, though with a sub-$1,000 profit through 17th place, they most certainly will be gunning to make it to at least the quarter-finals.

A number of recognizable names are still in the field, including Antonio Esfandiari, Vanessa Selbst, Andrew Lichtenberger, Kevin Saul, Andrew Robl, Eric Froehlich, Brian Hastings, Tommy Vedes, and Darren Elias.

Three rounds will be played today, at 1:00pm, 4:00pm, and 7:00pm. At the end of the night, the final four will be in place.

The $1,500 Limit Hold’em event also kicked off, with 222 of the original 730 players making it all the way through Day 1. Tom Cage has 50,500 chips to top the field, with Alex Freiberg about 10,000 chips behind. The money bubble will burst today when the 82nd place finisher is eliminated as the players all set their sights on the $211,921 first prize.
