The day that many in the poker world have been waiting for arrived on Wednesday with Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad’s debut at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). After starting out well in Event #8, the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament, Obrestad quickly learned about the battles during large field poker at the Rio.

“Up to 6k from 4500. Just winning small pots,” Obrestad Tweeted from the floor of the Rio Pavilion before asking her followers about a particular hand she was involved in. “Call EP (I) r(aise) w/ 99. Flop KTd7d. Chk chk. Turn 2. Chk, I bet 1/3rd pot. He calls river 9. He leads for 350 into 500. I r to 1050. He raises,” Obrestad reported to her followers. “First hand he had played since we started so no reads… He’s 50ish. Think that makes it a good fold?”

The answer to her query never was revealed as, just an hour later, Obrestad would be out of her first Las Vegas WSOP tournament. “Out. Got it in with 7s on KcQc7s9s vs KQ. River K. Good start to wsop lol,” she Tweeted following her departure. “Heading back to hotel to get a manicure. Great day despite busting early. Already regged for tomorrows noon $1500 PLH event. No more busting out before the first break!”

Away from the tournament tables at the WSOP, Phil Laak started on his attempt to break the record for marathon poker playing. “The Unabomber,” who is looking to break the current record of 78 hours by playing 80, has been keeping fans up-to-date with frequent Tweets from the felt. After five hours of play, Laak let his followers know through the Twitterverse, “5 down / 75 to go. Stuck 2500. Blech!”

A couple of hours later, Laak was maintaining positive thoughts: “8.5/71.5 (8hr mark was -2k – still at -2k). Feels good as I was at -3300 at hour 6.” Following that low point, the Unabomber Poker pro went on a heater and was able to slowly climb out of the hole.

For those that wanted to watch his assault on the record, Laak let his fans know by Tweeting, “17 hrs down / 63 to go. Ustream.com for live feed. (Stuck 430$).” He passed the break even mark at approximately 9:30am PT (“First time I have crossed over the “breakeven line” in 19 hrs!”) and, as of about 11:00am PT seemed to be running well: “Top pair, w flush draw and runner runner strt draw for me vs over pair for seat 8. Sick dbl up w rivered spade! Ahead 3,541!”

Phil Hellmuth has been a busy man during the early part of the WSOP. While he has been participating in several events, he also took the time to tape a commercial for one of the official sponsors of the WSOP, Jack Link’s Beef Jerky. One of the more prolific users of Twitvid, Hellmuth included one in a Tweet: “Video of my Sasquatch commercial, scary!” Giving his fans a sneak peek at the commercial, which apparently will air during the ESPN broadcasts of the WSOP, Hellmuth commented, “”Sasquatch” attacking me, right before he flips the table into interstitial space!”

On the minds of some baseball fans was last night’s near perfect game by the Detroit Tigers’ Armando Galarraga. After the final out of the ninth was blown by umpire Jim Joyce, Justin “Boosted J” Smith Tweeted, “Wow that perfect game call was atrocious.” “Hollywood” Dave Stann was in agreement: “Detroit ump Jim Joyce apologizes 2 pitcher, admits he made mistake & wrong call. Shouldn’t that be enough 2 declare it a perfect game?” Finally, noted baseball fan and UB.com pro Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin added his two cents, tweeting, “Jim Joyce scheduled to umpire home plate in Detroit today. Not sure if that would be a good idea. Assume/hope MLB changed his schedule.”

With the WSOP in full swing, many of the players are offering their jewels of wisdom, which are also some of the best Tweets of the past few days. “Poker tip of the day; if you’re complaining about the bad players that make it hard to win, you are one,” commented Erik Seidel on Wednesday. “Poker After Dark” host Ali Nejad opined about something that many poker players have felt when he Tweeted, “Lost big last night playing poker. Now I keep thinking about the things I would have rather done with the money, like burn it.” And in an astute observation from the WSOP felt, Shannon Shorr tweeted, “PSA to WSOP participants: Don’t fold and show your BB pre it slows down game. Also, don’t say a word to a guy after beating him in a pot.”
