By Dan Cypra for POKER NEWS DAILY | Posted on December 14, 2008
In a press release distributed by online poker room, sports book, and casino Bodog this week, it was revealed that the third Bodog Poker Open will take place sometime during the Spring of 2009. The "12 Days of Poker" promotion, which will kick off on December 21st, doles out Bodog Poker Open III prize packages to the top three finishers in its Grand Finale.
The 12 Days of Poker is actually a series of 45 tournaments. Its Grand Finale will take place on Thursday, January 15th. A leader board will log the top scorers throughout the 45 events, which run from December 21st until New Year’s Day. When the smoke clears, the top four will gain entry into the Grand Finale. The fifth through 100th place finishers will compete in a Semi-Final on Thursday, January 8th, with the top 18 players moving onto the Grand Finale. In addition, five players who competed in at least five BPO III events will be chosen at random to receive seats into the final tournament.
The Bodog Poker Open prize package includes entry into every single one of the BPO III events. How many tournaments BPO III will comprise has not yet been announced. According to officials of the online poker site, the information distributed about the 12 Days of Poker contained the very first mention of the third running of the Bodog Poker Open. The tournament series is slated to occur sometime during the Spring of 2009.
A bevy of players flocked to Bodog’s felts in order to compete in the first and second Bodog Poker Opens. The spectacle has grown in popularity and is the site’s answer to the Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) and PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). BPO II began in September.
The main event of BPO II featured the largest guaranteed tournament ever held on the online poker room at $300,000. It was won by zubs1aa, who pocketed $75,000 for the win. Heads-up, he defeated El Rubio, who won $45,000. Other top finishers in the BPO II Main Event included cmizzles3687 (third place for $28,500), flipflopn (fourth place for $21,000), Justin58 (fifth place for $16,500), Hasn82 (sixth place for $13,500), SHiFtYFiNGeR (seventh place for $10,500), ArmyDrill (eighth place for $6,600), and Justin Bonomo (ninth place for $5,100). The tournament had a $500 price tag and attracted 477 players.
Bonomo, who is known as ZeeJustin in the online poker world, is a member of Team Bodog. Others who make up the four-man crew include top female poker pro Evelyn Ng, World Series of Poker bracelet winner David Williams, and “Survivor: China” contestant Jean-Robert Bellande. The online poker room is dominated by the personality of founder Calvin Ayre, who recently stepped away from the organization.
The 12 Days of Poker begins with a $109 buy-in $3,000 added deep stack tournament. The event awards 3,000 starting chips and blind levels last 15 minutes each. The largest tournament to run as part of the promotion is a $20,000 added event with a $109 buy-in, the second of the series. It takes place on Sunday, December 21st at 4:00pm Eastern Time, two hours after the $3,000 added event. Bodog will pump more than $100,000 into the 45 prize pools in total.
Bodog’s weekly guaranteed tournament boasts a $100,000 guarantee every Sunday. It routinely sees an overlay, which means that the guarantee exceeds the actual prize pool. The Sunday major comes with a $109 price tag and kicks off at 4:00pm Eastern Time. Last week, there were 702 entrants, meaning Bodog contributed $29,800 to the prize pool.
Poker News Daily will have additional updates on the Bodog Poker Open III as soon as we receive them. In the meantime, check out Bodog for all of the information on the 12 Days of Poker.
