The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is in the books (what excitement! A Homer-Off for the win!), and now the teams are on the road to the dog days of summer. However, a significant question is up for examination – how did we do with our MLB predictions on the American League and the National League? In some cases, it is not bad, but there have been a few disappointments along the way.
The National League
In the National League, we have been somewhat successful with our MLB predictions, especially in the NL East. In our prediction, we predicted that the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets would finish 1-2, and currently that is exactly where they are. We have the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves flipped at 3-4, but nailed the Washington Nationals as the last-place team in the division. Overall, that’s a rather good record on prognostication.
For the NL Central, we were not as good. Our glowing recommendations on the Pittsburgh Pirates have been smashed as the Bucs have floundered to the bottom of the division. We did get the Milwaukee Brewers prediction in first right, but they are tied for that spot with the Chicago Cubs – and it can go either way at this point. The Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals are tied for third right now (52-50 in the division), so there’s a lot of play left in this division – let’s call this one an “incomplete.”
In the NL West, who did not pick the Los Angeles Dodgers first? The two “San” teams – Diego and Francisco – have hopped over our prediction of the Arizona Diamondbacks for 2-3 (Padres-Giants, respectively), while we got the Colorado Rockies in last place right. We will give the grade on this as a “B” because there are still some things to work out amongst the Padres, Giants, and Diamondbacks.
The American League
This is where the wheels start to come off, especially with the AL East. The two teams that we predicted at the bottom of the division, the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees, are running 1-2 right now. The team that we predicted winning the East, the Baltimore Orioles, has had a horrendous season and is at the bottom of the division. The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are still in the running for the division title, but right now, the predictions have been utterly dashed for this division!
The AL Central? That’s a better story. We have the Detroit Tigers picked correctly, and the Cleveland Guardians have overachieved to take second from my predicted pick, the Kansas City Royals, who have been one of the biggest disappointments of 2025. Got the Chicago White Sox right – in last place – while the Minnesota Twins are doing well in third place at this mark. Let’s give another “incomplete” on this division.
In the AL West, the only two things we have gotten right are the Los Angeles Angels and the (Sacramento) Athletics in fourth and fifth places, respectively, in the division. The top three teams – the division-leading Houston Astros (predicted third), the Seattle Mariners (first), and the Texas Rangers (second) – are only separated by 7.5 games, meaning it is anyone’s division to take. We will grade this as a “B” also as the season plays out.
With the trade deadline only a week away, it is time to see who the buyers and sellers are as teams stock up their rosters for a playoff run. At the start of September, we’ll have a better idea of who is going to make the playoffs – and how well our MLB predictions worked out!
