October 15 – Weekly Update

Welcome back to the Poker News Daily Weekly Update! I’m your host, Sean Gibson, and we’ll take a look now at the biggest poker headlines of the week.

We’ll start this week with a little poker literature news. Check out “No Limits: The Fundamentals of No Limit Hold’em” by Chris “Fox” Wallace and Adam Stemple. The two-hundred-fifty-page book is broken down into sixteen chapters. It includes lessons on knowing your opponents, bet sizing, the importance of position, common mistakes, and bluffing strategy.

Wallace, an instructor at the popular poker training site PokerXFactor.com, told Poker News Daily that the book’s development began about five years ago. “No Limits” is geared towards one-two No Limit cash game players, but Wallace explained that the concepts within it can be translated into tournaments as well. The book will set you back $34.95 and can be purchased by visiting NoLimitsBook.com.

If you need another reason to play on PokerStars, check out the site’s thirteen Regional Championships of Online Poker, or RCOOPs. Announced this week, the RCOOP series will offer up over seven million dollars in total guaranteed prize money and will play out in October, November, December, and February on PokerStars.

For players in the United States, the USA Championship of Online Poker will occur between November 21st and 28th. The U.S. RCOOP has the largest guaranteed prize pool at nearly three point three million dollars and offers 11 events. Only players in the United States and Virgin Islands are eligible to enter the USA COOP and the series concludes with a five hundred thirty dollar buy-in Main Event that will have at least one million bucks on the line.

Starting this week, UB.com is holding a series of freerolls with a spectacular grand prize: a twelve thousand dollar WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic package. The road to the Five Diamond Classic consists of three rounds, none of which requires a single penny to be spent. The winner of the freeroll series’ Main Event will be awarded a WPT prize package, which includes the $10,300 buy-in to the tournament at the Bellagio plus seventeen hundred dollars for travel and accommodations.

After filing for voluntary dismissal of its claims against Tiltware, attorneys for Deliverance Poker were met with stern demands from Judge James Nowlin of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. In documents filed on Tuesday, Nowlin laid out several tasks for Deliverance Poker to complete and threatened civil contempt if the company fails to comply.

A preliminary injunction hearing is tentatively scheduled for November Ninth in the case, which involves World Series of Poker November Niner Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi allegedly jumping sponsors from Deliverance Poker to Full Tilt. Ironically, if the hearing were to go on as scheduled, it would take place on the same day as the final table of the Main Event airs on ESPN. Deliverance Poker attorneys dismissed their claims against Tiltware, the owners of Full Tilt Poker, but must still serve the company.

On Monday, original World Series of Poker November Niner Scott Montgomery was robbed in a bathroom at the Bellagio. No, we’re not making this up. He recounted his story via Twitter on Monday morning around Nine A-M local time.

At the casino for preliminary events during the annual Festa al Lago, Montgomery relayed via Twitter:

“Got mugged today at Bellagio… guy pulled a knife on me in the restroom. I gave him the $2k in my wallet and he left… I called security, but they took like 15 mins so they didn’t catch him. They are useless twits. Didn’t even ask me to look at camera footage… Security pretty much just said oh well, life sucks, have a nice day. I’m pretty annoyed.”

In two thousand four, Greg Raymer was nearly mugged at the Bellagio, but fought off his attackers outside of his hotel room.

Turning to poker television news, according to an article on Deadline.com, the Executive Producers of the critically acclaimed Showtime series “Weeds” are trying to put together a new comedy series about poker. The series would be called “Whales” and potentially be part of the Showtime lineup in the near future. The show centers on a group of young twenty-somethings who, having finished their studies at Harvard and MIT, live in an apartment together in Las Vegas and try to win the World Series of Poker.

Finally, according to an e-mail sent to Black Card members, Full Tilt Poker is searching for Beta testers for Rush Poker Mobile. The application, which is available for Android-powered phones, features both real money and play money Rush Poker tables. Absent from the testing process is Rush Poker Mobile for the iPhone. A source close to Full Tilt Poker told Poker News Daily on Tuesday

“I don’t think we’ll see it available for the iPhone any time soon, certainly not this year.”

Rush Poker Mobile is written in Flash, which Apple’s iPhone does not support.

Full Tilt plans to make Rush Poker Mobile available to anyone with a compatible phone, including residents of the United States. In fact, you might be seeing open Beta in a month.
