It was a relatively short day Tuesday at the 2012 European Poker Tour (EPT) San Remo Main Event as it took just over five levels to weed out 42 players to narrow the field to the final three tables. Leading the remaining 24 players is Ireland’s Jason Tompkins with 2.423 million chips. He and the chip leader to start the last two days, Inge Forsmo, are the only two players with at least 2 million chips heading into Wednesday’s action.

If the shocking would happen and Tompkins would somehow be the first to be eliminated on Day 5, EPT San Remo would still be one of the most lucrative tournaments of his career. Tompkins has earned just over $400,000 in live tournaments, his biggest cash coming just this summer at the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP). In Las Vegas he placed 6th in a $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event, cashing in for $85,981.

Tompkins rose to the top of the leaderboard thanks to one big hand in Level 22. He opened the betting pre-flop and Amerigo Santoro re-raised him to 74,000. After Tompkins called, the flop was revealed to be 8-5-4, prompting a continuation bet from Santoro and another call from Tompkins. After a 3 fell on the turn, Santoro bet 120,000 which Tompkins raised up to 285,000. Santoro then moved all-in and Tompkins insta-called with 8-8, giving him top set. Excellent hand, but not as good as Santoro’s wheel, as he had A-2 in the hole. But another magical 3 appeared on the river, giving Tompkins a full house and a huge 1.2 million chip pot which doubled him up to 2.5 million.

After the hand, Jason Tompkins was noticeably excited when he tweeted, “Boooooom, sickest hand ever!!! Just doubled entire stack #EptSanRemo #stackem”

As previously mentioned, the chip leader to start both Days 3 and 4, Inge Forsmo, continued his strong play, finishing Tuesday night in 2nd place with 2.025 million chips. Like Tompkins, he earned much of those in a single hand. With the community cards reading 3-J-9-2-7 and 300,000 chips in the pot, Francesco Lorenzini bet 225,000 and Forsmo called. Lorenzini flipped over K-J for top pair, but it was just barely beaten out by Forsmo’s A-J. Same pair, better kicker. Lorenzini lost about half his stack on that hand, while Forsmo climbed to 2 million.

The 2012 EPT San Remo Main Event will pick up again on Wednesday at 2:00pm local time as the field of 24 is whittled down to the final table of eight players.
