A Pre-Dawn Error by Lee Jones
The problem: Eastbound flights from the West Coast often leave at the butt-crack of dawn. This allows the traveler to have some meaningful part of the day left upon arrival in New York, Washington, or Atlanta, and/or make their connection to London or Frankfurt. The result of this scheduling paradigm is that my flight out…

2010 Poker Hall of Fame Nominations by Lee Jones
Poker News Daily asked me for my thoughts about the ten finalists for this year’s Poker Hall of Fame. This caused me some angst as I decided what criteria I should use in giving my input. I mean, let’s consider the Baseball Hall of Fame. Back in my youth, I lived and breathed baseball, so…

Slow-Rolling is Massively -EV by Lee Jones
Poker News Daily published an article arguing that slow-rolling could be considered simply another legitimate weapon for a poker player to use against his opponents. At the risk of misstating the author’s point, the crux of the argument is, “It’s within the rules and it tilts my opponents (which is +EV for me). So I…

The State of Live $1-$2 No Limit Hold’em
While at this year’s World Series of Poker, I took the opportunity to play in quite a few different $1-$2 No Limit Hold’em (NLHE) games at casinos all over Las Vegas. I also watched some friends of mine who were out for a quasi-annual pilgrimage to poker Mecca. In short, I feel like I got…

First Impressions of the 2010 WSOP by Lee Jones
I think the WSOP may actually be shedding some excess and concentrating on poker, as it should. It’s no secret that the Las Vegas economy has been one of the hardest hit in the American (and global) downturn; the WSOP is reflecting its host city’s hardships. Now, I don’t consider this a bad thing. The…

Who Should Play in the WSOP Tournament of Champions?
This year, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) has decided to let the fans vote for 20 of the 27 players who will participate in the Tournament of Champions. Poker News Daily asked me to list who I’d vote for.

Thoughts on Poker Down Under by Lee Jones
I recently returned from Crown’s Aussie Millions Poker Championship in Melbourne, Australia. I had a delightful time and want to toss out a few random observations about the Southern Hemisphere and poker therein.

Well, How Did I Get Here by Lee Jones
I made a pretty big laydown recently and was probably as proud of it as I was of any big pot I’ve won recently. Long ago, David Sklansky reminded us that a bet you don’t lose spends just as well as a bet you win.

I Raise You a Cart Full of Groceries by Lee Jones
It was a typical evening of cards at Gil’s house. Gil is the regular host of my local poker game and he does it spectacularly well. The game starts on time and ends on time. He’s got a great sound system and the tunes range from Massive Attack to George Jones; you don’t know what you’re going to hear, but you know it’s going to be good.

RIP Binion’s Horseshoe Hotel by Lee Jones
The news has just come out that, as of December 14th, there will no longer be a hotel at the Horseshoe Hotel-Casino in Downtown Las Vegas. Of course, it used to be Binion’s Horseshoe, the site of the World Series of Poker for 35 years and the center of the poker world for that long.

Taking the Underground by Lee Jones
Underground poker games are, of course, a long-standing tradition throughout the United States – simply the commercial version of home games that have made up the backbone of poker playing today.

End the WSOP Arms Race
Well, we’ve winnowed the WSOP Big Dance field down to nine survivors who will compete for The Bracelet in November. But one race that started earlier in the event is still going on, and presumably will continue right up until November.

Very shortly, you’ll be seeing the first phase of a new tournament schedule at Cake Poker. We’re very excited about it and we think that once you see it, you will be too.

The Best and Worst of WSOP 2009
I just got back from two weeks at the World Series of Poker. It had the usual mix of high drama, low humor, insanity, and all the things you count on at the WSOP. More importantly, it had the wonderful opportunities to reconnect with friends from all over the poker world that I don’t get to see often enough.

Would I Teach My Kids Poker?
Recently, a thread started on one of the online forums where the original poster asked if people would teach their children poker.

The Daily Grind
Grinding: making a living playing a lot of online poker, often at low to moderate stakes. You have to admire the irony inherent in its use in the poker world. The “daily grind” has always been used to describe a job.
