Sam Trickett’s supply of “run good” doesn’t seem to have run out just quite yet as the British poker pro dominated the 2012 British Poker Awards by taking home three trophies from the ceremonies.
Earlier this week aboard the H.M.S. President, the crème of the British poker community convened for this year’s awards ceremonies. Trickett, who has been one of the dominant players on the international poker scene over the past year, was up for two awards that were voted on by the poker community. Trickett would take down those two awards, for Best Tournament Player and Best Cash Game Player, defeating the likes of Chris Moorman, Chris Brammer and Roberto Romanello to take the honors.
The big award for the evening was Player of the Year, one of the awards handed out by a select panel of judges rather than the fan vote. After his success over the past year (runner-up to Antonio Esfandiari in the “Big One For One Drop” at the 2012 World Series of Poker and a final table finish at the Macau High Stakes Challenge), the easy choice for the judges was Trickett. The three awards picked up by Trickett bring his grand total to five British Poker Awards (2010 Best Newcomer and 2011 Best Cash Game Player were his previous wins).
While Moorman was shut out of the vote in the Best Tournament and Best Cash Game Player awards, he did continue his streak on another front. In picking up the trophy for the Best Online Player, Moorman continued his winning streak in that category (he is the only person to ever win the Online Player award in the three-year history of the BPAs).
The ladies also did well during the awards ceremonies. In the difficult category of Poker Personality of the Year, Liv Boeree was able to defeat the previous winner of the honor, Kara Scott, as well as perennial BPA nominees Vicky Coren and Neil Channing to take home the trophy. Vanessa Selbst was chosen as the International Player of the Year for her achievements on tables around the world, while Kirsty Thompson of the United Kingdom/Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) picked up the honors for Biggest Contribution to Promoting Poker and the Best United Kingdom Tournament (the UKIPT Nottingham was the choice of the fans).
Channing joined Trickett and Moorman in extending his run of wins at the BPAs. Channing was chosen as the winner of the Best Blogger/Social Media User by the fans, making it the third BPA that Channing has picked up. In 2011, Channing was honored by winning the same award and, in 2010, he picked up the trophy as Best Cash Game Player.
For Best Newcomer, the easy choice for the voters was Chris McCorkell. Since November 2011, McCorkell has been one of the strongest new players in the game, taking down nearly a half million in tournament earnings including his first WSOP bracelet (the $3000 NLHE Shootout) and a strong showing in the WSOP Championship Event (172nd place). Also taking down BPAs were The Hendon Mob (for Best Poker Forum) and the Champions Poker League (for Best Poker League).
Shut out of the awards this year was Coren, who had previously won two BPA trophies for her work in poker. While she didn’t win for either Poker Personality or Best Blogger, Coren had to be happy that her home casino, the Grosvenor Victoria (“The Vic”) in London, was chosen by the fans for a BPA, however.
A part of the British Poker Festival’s month-long run of poker activities, the 2012 British Poker Awards indeed honored the best the U. K. has to offer the world of poker.
