The popular PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) returns on September 3rd and consists of 45 tournaments, an increase from the 33 that were run in 2008. Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Stud, HORSE, Badugi, and 2-7 Triple Draw events will be held.
The WCOOP is regularly one of the richest tournament series held and has taken place annually after being introduced in 2002. The world’s top online poker players regularly head to PokerStars for the WCOOP gala, including Daniel Negreanu, a sponsored pro of the site. “Kid Poker” commented in a PokerStars press release, “There are hundreds of exciting tournaments all year round, but nothing compares to the WCOOP – it’s the ‘must play’ event of the year for any poker player. Last year, over 20,000 players came together from across the world to compete in the largest ever online poker event for their chance to become a World Champion.” At least $40 million will be up for grabs during the 2009 festivities.
Brand new events for the this year’s WCOOP include a $320 buy-in Fixed Limit Badugi tournament, a $530 buy-in Heads-Up Pot Limit Omaha contest, and a Big Ante No Limit Hold’em event. The festivities will culminate in a $5,200 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Main Event that will run for two days. Kicking off the same day is another high-stakes contest, a $10,300 buy-in High Roller HORSE tournament. The events come with $10 million and $1 million guarantees, respectively.
PokerStars released a tentative tournament offering last month and solicited player feedback. Here is the final schedule of events for the 2009 WCOOP. All times are Eastern:
