The poker world held its breath this week as online prodigy Tom “Durrrr” Dwan came within inches of his first WSOP bracelet. Event number eleven was a rather lackluster fifteen hundred dollar No Limit Hold’em tournament and the top prize was “only” six hundred thousand dollars – Dwan is used to shoving bigger pots than that at the nosebleed cash games. The excitement surrounded the many massive side bets that Dwan has with other poker pros, which in his words will make it “the biggest day ever” if he wins a bracelet this year. New Zealander Simon Watt won the bracelet.
The last time we reported about Phil Laak’s endurance test, he had been playing poker for one hundred and six hours and was still going strong. He can be proud: for years to come, poker players will tell their grandchildren that when they were young, a person once sat and played for one hundred and fifteen hours straight. That’s right: Laak exceeded his goal of playing eighty hours of poker by nearly an entire work week. Phil Laak’s name will live forever in poker history. We seriously doubt there will ever be another player crazy enough to attempt to break his record.
