Shortly after dinnertime on the East Coast of the United States on Tuesday, Tom Dwan and Dan “jungleman12” Cates sat down for a Durrrr Challenge session. Dwan succinctly posted on Twitter prior to the festivities beginning, “About to play a short session vs jungleman on FTP now.” The action takes place exclusively on Full Tilt Poker.
When the smoke cleared, it was the same old story: Cates had continued his dominance in the No Limit Hold’em challenge. A total of 1,099 hands were played yesterday and Cates extended his lead by $39,000. He’s now up $1.25 million overall and 19,335 hands are in the books out of the 50,000 needed for completion. It’s quickly looking like this could be a runaway.
Cates posted on Twitter when the final cards had been dealt, “At end of 1K hand match, I’m up $40K. May play later today,” although no subsequent action took place.
In the largest hand of Tuesday’s battle, Dwan raised to $1,200 before the flop and Cates pushed it to $4,800. Dwan called to bring a flop of 7-K-J.
First to act, Cates put in a continuation bet of $4,800 and Dwan called behind. The turn was a nine and Cates once again fired, this time $14,400. Dwan once again called and the final card was a six. Cates moved all-in and Dwan committed his stack of $30,000. When the cards were revealed, Dwan showed 10-7 for a pair of sevens, while Cates tabled a big bluff with Q-5. The pot was worth $108,000.
In the second largest pot of Tuesday’s 1,000-hand session, we saw our standard pre-flop 3bet and the first three cards came 8-K-8 with two spades. Cates fired out $4,400 in chips and Dwan made it $11,100. Cates called and the five of spades on the turn put a possible flush on board.
Cates hit the brakes and checked, while Dwan moved all-in for $108,000. Cates called for his final $35,000 and the river was run twice. Cates tabled J-8 for trip eights, while Dwan showed 8-6 for trip eights with a weaker kicker; neither player held a spade in his hand.
The first board completed with the seven of spades, sending a little over $50,000 to Cates. The second river was the deuce of spades and Cates raked in the entire pot, which was worth $101,000.
Dwan hasn’t been in the lead in the second cycle of the Durrrr Challenge since about the 3,000-hand mark and the $1.25 million edge by Cates is the largest by either party so far.
On TwoPlusTwo, posters were already digging Dwan’s grave in the challenge. One person suggested that Dwan waive the white flag: “I know we’re not even halfway through, but tbh, I just can’t see a way back for durrrr. I think he can kiss the $1.5 million goodbye. jungleman12 has him figured out and is just winning every pot. durrrr cannot come back only winning like 40% of the pots, just not gonna happen. jungleman12 is just too good.”
