Tamar Abraham Wins $1,000 Ladies Event
Winning your first World Series of Poker bracelet is special. Winning it in against a historically large field is even better. That’s what Tamar Abraham did Sunday, grabbing the crown in the $1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship. With 1,295 players, it was the largest field in the event’s history, creating a first prize for Abraham of $192,167. It was by far the largest cash of her career; prior to this, she had less than $50,000 in lifetime live tournament earnings.
Abraham entered Day 4 with 2.37 million chips, good for middle the pack of the seven remaining women. She had a long climb ahead of her, though, as chip leader Shiina Okamoto had 11.67 million. Abraham’s biggest hand was arguably when it was six-handed and she ended up all-in with K-J against Okamato’s J-J and rivered a straight to double-up and stay alive.
Shortly thereafter, she doubled through Okamato again to take the lead. From there, it was essentially straight-up domination for Abraham, as she continued to grow her advantage. She had a huge lead going into heads-up against Okamato and though Okamato won some hands, she never really made a serious push before Abraham finished the job.
In her post-game interview, Tamar Abraham called the experience “surreal” and credited her large contingent of women on the rail.
“I couldn’t have done it without them, to be honest.”
Somehow the Main Event is here already
I don’t know about you, but it feels like the 2023 World Series of Poker just started. But here it is, the Main Event. The first of four starting flights kicks off Monday. Late registration is open through Level 7, which means players can skip Day 1 altogether and signup during the first two levels of Day 2.
Those who make it through Days 1A, 1B, and 1C will play in Days 2A, 2B, and 2C on Friday, July 7. Survivors from Thursday’s Day 1D, which will likely be the largest starting flight, will play in Day 2D on Saturday.
After Day 2, all survivors combine for Day 3 and beyond. The one break in the schedule will be Saturday, July 15, the day before the final table. The final table will start Sunday, July 16 and play down from nine to four players. The winner will be determined on Monday, July 17.
