While many across the United States were watching the NCAA Final Four play out, others were preparing for the start of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season Sunday night. “Hollywood” Dave Stann was the first to bring up the kickoff game when he Tweeted, “Happy Peeps Day! Not only does that dude rise from the dead today, but most importantly, it’s baseball season Opening Day! Gooo Bluuue,” in reference to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Joe Sebok, who has the burden of being a Chicago Cubs fan, reacted to a Tweet from his fellow “Poker2Nite” host Scott Huff by saying, “Baseball is starting up again! @scottbhuff just reminded me with his Tweet. Go Cubs! This is the year!”

A potential prop bet was brewing on the Twitterscape between pros Shannon Shorr and Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin over whose team would fare better during the upcoming season. Shorr got the discussion going when he fired off, “Going to Braves opener on Monday. Will sting @basebaldy financially when he inevitably bets the Cubs.” Baldwin, who played collegiate baseball and continues to follow the game, simply chirped, “U got a wager,” in reply to Shorr, although the actual numbers were not disclosed to Twitter followers.

Also on the front lines for the start of the MLB season was World Poker Tour (WPT) tournament reporter B.J. Nemeth: “Jets flying over Fenway Park were loud! But that’s such an awesome, all-American way to kick off a big game!” Nemeth provided nearly play-by play coverage of the game for his followers as it unfolded and was especially excited about the late inning comeback by the Boston Red Sox.

Sunday brought Easter wishes from many in the poker community, including Linda Johnson, Liz Lieu, Joe Navarro, Jonathan “FieryJustice” Little, to their followers, but the huge 7.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked Baja, California dominated the conversation later in the day. Actress and poker player Shannon Elizabeth was in her California offices and Tweeted soon after the temblor, “My whole office just shook for quite a bit! I hope everyone’s OK!” Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo was in Las Vegas during the quake and reported via Twitter that the effects could be felt there. “Wow, you really feel the effects of an earthquake if you live on the 27th floor,” Bonomo chirped.

Another player who felt the effects of the Baja earthquake was Sebok, who Tweeted, “That earthquake was long and strong… Easily the biggest I have been in since ’89 in San Francisco.” Taking a more philosophical approach about the Sunday earth-shaker was Eric Mizrachi, who added from his Twitter account, “Earthquake, Earthquakes, & more Earthquakes. What are you guys doing to G-D’s Planet? We are def. doing something wrong. 2012?”

The Sunday online poker tournaments also garnered a great deal of interest as top players drove deep in a multitude of events. Adam “Roothlus” Levy played well on his home site UB.com, Tweeting, “Got 3rd in @Ultimate_Bet’s $200k guaranteed for a cool $18k. Saaahweet.” DoylesRoom pro Amit “amak316” Makhija added, “At the mulligan final table, 56k for first! Let’s go!” Makhija, however, would not make it as deep as Levy did, Tweeting, “Sigh got 6th. Got 3 outed for huge. Still made about 28K today and got a win, solid day could have been big though.” This prompted Matt Savage to jab, “Ho hum another 28 Dimes! Life is good when you are @amak316!”

Taking the honors for best Tweets of the weekend fell to the two players who battled for the National Heads-Up Poker Championship this year. Erik Seidel, known for his thought-provoking messages, Tweeted, “Every day I read about Sarah Palin leading rallies, thinking about running for pres + I look to see if it’s April 1st.” Annie Duke had a thought about the driving styles of California residents when she Tweeted, “At a red light waiting to turn right. Clearly signed no right turn on red. Dude behind me starts laying on his horn. People suck.”
