Poker News

The top story of the weekend from poker players and their Twitter accounts was the beginning of the 2010 World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship. The crème of the poker world descended on the Bellagio in Las Vegas and many had a great Day One to Tweet about.

Topping the list of those who were on the positive side of the ledger for Day One included DoylesRoom pro Amit “amak316” Makjiha, who Tweeted a simple, “158k to end the day” to his followers. Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo was just as brief: “139k at end of day 1.” Others were a bit more descriptive of their days, with Jonathan “FieryJustice” Little Tweeting, “Ended the day at 107000 which I guess I have to be happy with, given the table.” Meanwhile, Daniel Negreanu reported, “Another day 1 in the books I ended with 80,475. 100 bbs for tomm after a bit of an annoying day.”

Getting the most attention on Twitter was one of the more attractive players on the poker scene, Beth Shak. She Tweeted prior to the start of the WPT Championship, “Can’t wait. Going to Agent Provocateur today… they are giving me ‘lucky’ bra N panties E wear to tourney… sooo hot!” The folks at the WPT Live Update desk Tweeted, “A German TV crew is following @BethShak for a show along the lines of ‘Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous.'” Shak used her lucky lingerie to drive to a great start on Day One. When action begins on Monday, Shak will be stacked with 189,725 in chips; no word yet on whether the lucky underwear gets to join her on Day Two.

The list of players who took advantage of the slower WPT Championship blind structure and risked little in the first day included Jennifer Harman, who Tweeted, “Finished the day with 87k,” and Kathy Liebert (“End of day ended 96700”). Others, however, face a tough Day Two, including Gavin Smith, who Tweeted, “Ended day with 42k, tough day where little went right, still have plenty of chips to fight with though.”

Even with the slow pace of the WPT Championship structure, a couple of pros were unable to make their way out of Day One. After a nice string of cashes during the Five Star schedule, Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad was unable to make any type of run in her first WPT Championship, Tweeting, “Out 9s against Ks with 15 blinds.” Another player who had a difficult day was Justin “Boosted J” Smith, who Tweeted upon his departure, “Some days it’s not meant to be… today was one of them… played alright I’m satisfied.”

While the poker was preeminent in many Tweets, there was still some fun thrown into the mix. Liebert stepped to the forefront with some amusing anecdotes about being at the same table as Phil Ivey: “I’m giving Phil Ivey a hard time. Why not? Just cause he’s tough and on my left?” Then, it was “Told Phil he reminded me of Tiger Woods,” followed by “Then made fun of the commercial where he says, ‘I’m just playing the same game… kind of.'”

Phil Hellmuth revealed how he will enter this year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. “My WSOP entrance this year is as an MMA fighter,” Hellmuth Tweeted. “Wearing gold, or black robe w hood up… Now shooting prelim-video in MMA cage in So Cal.” This led to Negreanu firing back, “Please say you are going to wear a shirt. Your tiny nipples and moobs have been on ESPN far too much already.”

There are several nominees for the best Tweet of the weekend, with WPT live reporter B.J. Nemeth starting the fun by Tweeting, “I am now 0-for-308 in crashing my plane by listening to my iPod/iPhone during takeoff & landing.” Obrestad revealed an interesting detail about herself when she Tweeted, “Apparently I talk in my sleep (in english lol) about check raising drawing dead hahaha.” Arguably topping the list from the weekend, however, was “Poker2Nite” host Scott Huff, who Tweeted the gem, “Thinking about buying the iNapkin app for my iPad, but I think I need to have the iLightMoneyonFire app installed in order to buy it.”
